The Icosahedron

The icosahedron has 20 faces, 12 vertices, and 30 edges. The dual of the icosahedron is the dodecahedron, with (interchanging the number of faces and vertices) 12 faces, 20 vertices, and 30 edges. First are ocean images taken summer 2003 in Boca Raton. The center image above is apparently nonobvious: the icosahedron is sitting on wet sand illuminated by the sun. Beneath these ocean/beach images are a few images showing the icosahedron in a marine tank at the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex in Boca Raton, with stingrays swimming close by, taken in summer 2002. The stingrays hung around the structures, there was something about them that attracted them.

Update: I learned recently that because of the hurricanes last year in Florida, Gumbo Limbo didn't have power for eight (8) days in a row, and many of their marine mammals had to be released. The little stingrays seen in these images were released at that time. Hopefully they are still alive, swimming free in the ocean. They have other stingrays now. As I write this, it is June 30, 2005, and after almost a year of work, the Complex is nearly back to normal.

A Second Update: then came hurricane Wilma that ripped through the Boca Raton area and did more and serious damage to Gumbo Limbo, forcing them to close for several days, and who knows how long it will take to recover this time. I haven't spoken with anyone at the Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens, nor did I last year, but it is about 5 miles from Gumbo Limbo, in the Yamato area in Delray Beach, and they likely sustained a lot of damage as well. The Morikami has more open grounds, whereas Gumbo Limbo is extremely dense.
